This type of switch will be referred to as a 2 circuit lamp switch when shopping at home stores. Don’t mistake this for a three way switch (pictured below), the two do not function in the same way.
This diagram is similar to the one above, but the switch comes before the new light in the circuit. New cable is run from the receptacle to the new switch location and from there to the light location. The switch may also be added in the the same box with the receptacle as in the diagrams at this link, where the two are installed in a double-gang electrical box.

Lamp cords are usually one color, making the standard black-hot, white-neutral guidelines useless for determining polarity. Other methods are therefore used to determine the polarity on a lamp cord. Check the insulation on the cord wires closely and you will find either a textured bead or a thin colored line running along one wire, this is the neutral.

An isolated-ground receptacle makes use of an extra wire for a separate ground in the circuit. This is the red wire in the 14/3 cable used here which is marked and connected to the grounding terminal on the receptacle. The other cable wires are connected as with any other circuit except for the ground wire. The bare copper ground wire is NOT connected to the receptacle, instead it is connected to the grounding terminal inside the electrical box where the receptacle is housed.
